Melamine Milk Scandal — Cover-Up Timed to the Olympics

Sanlu Group and other Chinese dairy producers added the industrial chemical melamine to milk and infant formula to fake higher protein readings on quality tests. Roughly 300,000 children were sickened, 54,000 hospitalised, and six died. A local deputy mayor, informed of the contamination in August 2008, instructed the company to "shut the mouths of the victims by money" and wait until after the Beijing Olympics concluded before the matter became public.
