Death Penalty Abolished in France

Justice Minister Robert Badinter secured the abolition of capital punishment within months of Mitterrand taking office, ending a practice France had used as recently as 1977 (the guillotining of Hamida Djandoubi). France was one of the last Western European democracies to abolish it.
