2005 Banlieue Riots — Three Weeks of Unrest
The deaths of two teenagers electrocuted while hiding from police in Clichy-sous-Bois triggered nearly three weeks of rioting across France's deprived suburban housing estates, driven by long-standing grievances over discrimination, unemployment, and heavy-handed policing in immigrant communities. Nearly 9,000 vehicles were burned and a state of emergency was declared for the first time since the Algerian War.
