Operation Serval — French Forces Halt Islamist Advance in Mali
Hollande ordered French troops into Mali on 11 January 2013 to stop an advance by Islamist insurgent groups toward the capital, Bamako, at the request of the Malian government. The operation succeeded in its immediate military objective, though the follow-on Operation Barkhane (from 2014) settled into a much longer regional counter-terrorism campaign across the Sahel that ultimately failed to produce lasting stability.
