Detained American Student Otto Warmbier Dies After 17 Months in Custody
University of Virginia student Otto Warmbier was arrested at Pyongyang airport in January 2016 and sentenced to 15 years' hard labour for allegedly attempting to steal a propaganda poster from his hotel. He fell into a coma in North Korean custody in March 2016 — a fact the regime concealed for over a year, attributing it to botulism and a sleeping pill when it finally disclosed his condition in June 2017. He was released in a vegetative state with extensive brain damage and died six days later.
