Pussy Riot Imprisoned for Cathedral Protest

Members of the feminist punk collective Pussy Riot were sentenced to two years in prison in August 2012 for a brief protest performance in Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral criticising Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church's support for him. The European Court of Human Rights ruled in 2018 that the prosecution and sentencing were disproportionate and violated their rights to freedom of expression and a fair trial, and that their pre-trial detention conditions amounted to degrading treatment.
