Surprise Kyiv Visit — Johnson Becomes One of Ukraine's Strongest Western Allies
Weeks after Russia's full-scale invasion, Johnson travelled in secrecy from London via Warsaw and by train to Kyiv on 9 April 2022, becoming one of the first Western leaders to meet Zelensky in person in the capital. He pledged around 120 armoured vehicles, new anti-ship missile systems, and backed an additional $500 million in World Bank lending to Ukraine, walking with Zelensky through central Kyiv as a public show of solidarity. Johnson returned to Kyiv again that August for Ukraine's Independence Day, and the UK committed over £2.3 billion in military and financial aid to Ukraine under his premiership.
