Epstein Files — Withheld Despite a Law Requiring Their Release
Trump promised during his campaign to release the government's files on Jeffrey Epstein. In office, Attorney General Pam Bondi was privately told by May 2025 that Trump's name appeared in the files — reportedly alongside unverified claims — and officials advised against public disclosure. Congress passed, and Trump signed, the Epstein Files Transparency Act in November 2025 mandating release of the records. The Justice Department subsequently missed the legal deadline and made what one of the law's own Republican authors, Rep. Thomas Massie, said were "illegal redactions." Journalists later found dozens of pages, including FBI interview notes tied to a woman's allegation against Trump, that had been catalogued internally but not released.
