Giorgia Meloni — Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d'Italia / FdI)

2022–present · 2 events

Meloni took office in October 2022 heading Italy's most right-wing government since 1945, in coalition with Matteo Salvini's Lega and Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia. Her signature migration policy — offshore asylum-processing centres in Albania — has been repeatedly blocked by Italian courts and, in August 2025, by the European Court of Justice itself. On Ukraine, however, Meloni has been one of Europe's most consistent supporters of Kyiv, a position that puts her at odds with her own coalition partner Salvini, one of Europe's most prominent pro-Putin voices.

Mario Draghi — National Unity Government (Draghi)

2021–2022 · 3 events

Former ECB president Mario Draghi was installed as a technocrat Prime Minister in February 2021 at the head of a broad unity government spanning nearly every party in parliament except Giorgia Meloni's Fratelli d'Italia. He became one of Europe's most decisive voices after Russia's invasion of Ukraine — co-authoring the Western sanctions package and pushing France and Germany to back EU candidate status for Kyiv — while working to cut Italy's dependence on Russian gas. His government collapsed in July 2022 when the Five Star Movement withdrew support over a cost-of-living relief bill.
