Li Wenliang Silenced — The Doctor Who Tried to Warn China About Covid-19
On 30 December 2019, ophthalmologist Dr Li Wenliang shared a private warning about a SARS-like virus with medical school colleagues. Four days later, Wuhan police summoned and formally admonished him for "spreading rumours," forcing him to sign a statement admitting wrongdoing. He contracted Covid-19 from a patient weeks later and died on 7 February 2020, aged 34 — after which Chinese authorities posthumously exonerated him and apologised to his family.
