Poverty Alleviation Campaign — Claimed Elimination of Extreme Poverty

Xi's government declared in 2020 that it had eliminated extreme rural poverty nationwide through a targeted campaign of infrastructure investment, relocation, and subsidised industry in the poorest counties, building on the decades of broader growth that followed Deng's reforms. Independent researchers have questioned some of the methodology behind the official statistics, but substantial, real improvements in rural incomes and infrastructure over this period are not seriously disputed.
