Chirac Acknowledges French Complicity in the Holocaust

On the 53rd anniversary of the Vel' d'Hiv round-up, Chirac became the first French president to formally acknowledge the French state's role in deporting Jews to Nazi death camps, breaking with decades of official insistence that Vichy France was not the "real" French Republic and therefore bore no institutional responsibility.
