Pacific Nuclear Tests Resumed — International Boycotts

Weeks after taking office, Chirac ordered the resumption of French nuclear weapons testing at Mururoa Atoll in the South Pacific, ending a moratorium. Riots broke out at the test site in Tahiti causing millions of dollars in damage; more than twenty countries lodged official protests and consumer boycotts of French wine and produce spread internationally.
