What happened
An intense wildfire has erupted in the foothills of the French Pyrenees, close to the Spanish border, leading to the forced evacuation of more than 10,000 residents from numerous small communities. The fire, concentrated in Trévillach near Perpignan, has consumed at least 4,600 hectares. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez acknowledged the worsening conditions, stating, "Today the battle resumes." Local resident Patrice recounted the terrifying speed of the fire's spread, noting it came within 300 meters of homes. The event has also impacted the Tour de France, with organisers requesting spectators to avoid the final 40km of the third stage to facilitate emergency access.
