Poland Becomes Europe's Frontline Lifeline for Ukraine

Within days of Russia's February 2022 invasion, Poland became the indispensable rear base for Ukraine's defence: the airport at Rzeszów, roughly 70km from the border, turned into the main transit hub through which the large majority of Western weapons shipments entered Ukraine. Poland itself donated more heavy weapons than any other country relative to GDP — over 300 tanks and 470 armoured vehicles in total — and took in roughly 3 million refugees, more than any other European country, spending an estimated 4.9 billion złoty on their support in 2022 alone, the highest of any OECD member.
