MH17 Shot Down Over Eastern Ukraine
Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was shot down over Russian-backed separatist territory in eastern Ukraine on 17 July 2014, killing all 298 people on board. The Dutch-led Joint Investigation Team concluded in 2016 that the aircraft was struck by a Buk surface-to-air missile brought in from Russia and fired from separatist-held territory, and a Dutch court convicted three men โ two Russians and one Ukrainian separatist โ in absentia of murder in November 2022, finding Russia exercised "overall control" over the separatist forces responsible.
