Boris Nemtsov Assassinated Steps From the Kremlin

Opposition leader and former deputy prime minister Boris Nemtsov, one of Putin's most prominent critics, was shot dead on a bridge within sight of the Kremlin on 27 February 2015, hours after publicly urging Russians to join an anti-war march. Five Chechen men were convicted of carrying out the killing in 2017, but Russian investigators never charged anyone with ordering it, and Nemtsov's family and human rights groups have long argued the investigation deliberately avoided pursuing leads pointing toward the security services of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, a Putin ally.
