Winter Fuel Payment Stripped from 10 Million Pensioners

Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced on 29 July 2024 that the Winter Fuel Payment — worth up to £300 — would be restricted to pensioners claiming Pension Credit only. Around 10 million pensioners who previously received it lost the payment, including many on low fixed incomes who do not claim Pension Credit due to stigma or complexity. The government's own analysis projected an additional 50,000 pensioners would fall into relative poverty as a result.
