Starmer Reverses on Trans Rights After Supreme Court Ruling

On 16 April 2025, the UK Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the word "woman" in the Equality Act 2010 refers to biological sex, not gender identity. Prime Minister Starmer welcomed the ruling, stating "A woman is an adult female — the court has made that absolutely clear," declining to repeat his 2022 statement that "trans women are women." The reversal provoked significant internal Labour dissent.
