What happened
Human Rights Watch researchers worked in Bucha from 4–10 April 2022, within days of the Russian withdrawal, and documented extensive evidence of summary executions, unlawful killings, enforced disappearances, and torture. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights' office separately verified at least 50 unlawful killings, a figure it raised to at least 73 by December 2022, with an additional 105 deaths still being investigated at that point.
An eight-month visual investigation by the New York Times, cross-referencing satellite imagery, phone intercepts, and open-source video, concluded that Russian paratroopers of the 234th Air Assault Regiment were responsible for the killings documented along Yablunska Street — one of the most extensively documented sites.
Russia's response has been sustained denial and disinformation, including claims the bodies were staged after Russian forces left, a claim independently debunked by satellite imagery showing bodies in the same locations while Russian forces still controlled the town.
